Are orbs only dirt, smog, dust, excessive light on camera lenses so they appear in pictures?

I have photos with orbs on and I have the MOST AMAZING "ghost" photograph taken in my house about 10 years ago, the house is 17 years old and I thought these kind of things only appeared in old houses....how wrong was I.
