Questions about riding boots?

I currently have a pair of paddock boots from Tuffrider, but they're getting cracks so I'll probably need new boots next year. I'm starting to look around now incase there are sales or free shipping. I want tall boots though. My breeches usually come up a bit and then my socks show and I think it would just be easier with tall boots. I've heard of field boots and dress boots. Which should I get? I'm not showing or anything. Just for lessons and schooling shows. Even if I did start showing, would field boots be ok?
